Local News & Community Updates
Stories from Doniphan and Ripley County including local issues, government decisions, school news, and community events you won't find anywhere else on the dial.
In a rural community where internet is unreliable and cell towers go dark in a storm, 99.1 KQJN FM is the one constant. Local news, local weather, local sports, and a lifeline for the whole county when it matters most. Free, over the air, for everyone.

During major weather events and emergencies, KQJN has been the only reliable source of up-to-date information for many rural residents, particularly those in areas with no cellular or internet access. When the internet and cell towers go down, our radio signal remains strong. We coordinate directly with local government and emergency services to deliver real-time updates, road closures, river gauge readings, and safety information. We provide this vital information free, over the air, to every household in our signal range.

In Doniphan and across Ripley County, there are other radio stations. But they play generic music and news pulled from satellite feeds, or broadcast content from cities hours away. None of them broadcast local.
KQJN-LP is the only station in the entire county dedicated to hyper-local coverage including town meetings, school sports, weather specific to our area, emergency alerts from local officials, and stories about the people and places our listeners actually know.
Many of our listeners live miles from the nearest town with no broadband and weak cell signals. Radio is not a nostalgic preference for them, it is their only reliable connection to the information that affects their safety and daily lives.
While larger stations focus on regional or national news, we provide hyper-local content like town meetings, high school sports, local business updates, and community announcements that would otherwise go unreported.
During severe weather, disasters, or crises, we serve as a critical communication lifeline. Unlike online news or cellular alerts, our signal reaches residents even when the internet and cell towers go down.
Unlike commercial stations that prioritize advertising revenue, we are mission-driven and focused solely on serving our listeners. Every decision we make is centered on what benefits our community, not on maximizing profit.
In an area where many residents lack reliable internet or cell service, anyone with a basic FM radio can access vital information for free, anytime, with no subscription or device required.
